I travel a lot for work and one of the places I had the chance to visit during my work trips was Mexico City (Ciudad de México – CDMX). I have to be honest, I was a little bit skeptical when I saw the city for the first time. It is a big city with chaotic traffic. Still, if you have the chance to look around you will find great things to do and beautiful sites.

Since I was in Mexico City for work I only had one weekend to explore so I tried to fit in as many activities as I possibly could, starting my weekend on Friday night with my coworkers. We paid a tour called Santo Ring Lucha Libre and Pulque that started with a trip to a pulqueria, a type of tavern in Mexico that specialize in serving a traditional alcoholic beverage known as pulque. We went to one of the most popular pulquerias in CDMX called La Hija de los Apaches. They have live music with a band playing Mexican songs; perfect for dancing and having fun, which I did! After dancing and drinking pulque we walked to the Arena Mexico to watch some lucha libre. When we entered the arena I was impressed with how big it was. There was a lot of people and it felt like I was in a stadium to watch a big and important game. That`s when I learned that lucha libre is very popular in Mexico. The fights are aired on TV and people have their favorite fighters that they cheer on while wearing theirs masks. There were people of all ages and they seemed very passionate about this sport. The production of the show is great and it is very entertaining. Sometimes you almost forget that the fights are not “real”, they practiced all the moves but you can`t help but ask yourself “how is it possible that they are not getting hurt?”.

My Saturday started with a visit to the National Museum of Anthropology. It is a beautiful museum that shows the world’s largest collection of ancient Mexican art. I spend the whole morning just walking around and learning so much about the creation of Mexico. You can also take cool pictures there, definitely worth it the visit. The museum is located in  Polanco (I think the nicest neighborhood in Mexico City) you can walk around safely and visit all the cool attractions and restaurants in the area. As I mentioned before, bus tours are the best option to see the whole city when you don`t have much time so I took the City Tour Mexico the south circuit hop-on hop-off. That way I could see a lot of the city in one day. I felt like all the neighborhoods were different from each other and had something special to offer. My favorite parts were Plaza Madrid with la Fuente de las Cibeles, estadio olimpico , and Coyoacán. The Frida Kahlo museum is located in Coyoacán but unfortunately when I got there the museum was already closed. Maybe next time!

The last day of my tour around Mexico City was my favorite because I did something that I could do ONLY there. I visited the Teotihuacan Pyramids–  the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun. I very much recommend to pay one of the guide tours available at the entrance of the pyramids complex. They make the whole experience so much better that I can`t imagine doing it without one. The guide tour was great and explained so much of the history behind the making of these pyramids. The coolest part is that you can climb all the way to the top of the pyramids.  I got there early in the morning to avoid the crowds so it did not take me too long to get to the top.  The climb it is not the easiest thing to do so be prepared. Also, if you go later in the day you might wait a long time to climb the pyramid . When I was leaving the site around 2pm there was a huge line around the Pyramid of the Sun. The tour guide told me that could take even two hours to get to the top. Still, the views are perfect and it is a once in a lifetime experience! To finish the perfect visit I grabbed lunch at a restaurant called La Gruta just a few steps from the entrance of the pyramids complex. The food was average but what makes this place special is the interior. It is inside a grotto and you can take really nice pictures.

I had an unique experiences in Mexico City. The traffic still bothers me a lot but there are really cool things to do there. So If you ever go, I hope these tips help you to have an even better experience.
